“I can’t go back to Congo,” said 18-year-old Jean* from the safety of her new home in Uganda. “My mother and father are dead. My brothers and sisters are dead.” Though she survived the dangerous journey out of the Democratic Republic of Congo, it took a devastating toll: the loss of her entire family and her left leg to a stray bullet. The conflict has taken everything except her dreams. “I want to be a doctor when I grow up,” she said. “I want to help people like me.”
